Backing up your Mac is simple and important. We recommend it for everyone.
Back up with Time Machine
Time Machine is the built-in backup feature of your Mac. It’s a complete backup solution, but you can use other backup methods as well.Create a backup
Store files in iCloud
One of the best features of CrashPlan’s free client is the ability to backup to another computer on your network — a potential boon to laptop users who want to keep their data safe but prefer. But then migration to a new Mac is the perfect time for spring cleaning and creating a good backup strategy. Here is what I do (and what I did when I migrated from a 2003 PB to a 2011 MBA, which had a smaller 256 SSD HDD).
- Having a Mac Backup Service is essential to anyone using a Mac. Having to back up the data inside a Mac computer is important to enable access to the files that may be important to anyone whenever they decide to reformat their Mac; or if an accident or a disaster unfortunately erases it.
- When you connect an external drive directly to your Mac, you might be asked if you want to use the drive to back up with Time Machine. Select Encrypt Backup Disk (recommended), then click Use as Backup Disk. An encrypted backup is accessible only to users with the password. Learn more about keeping your backup disk secure.
You can also use iCloud and iCloud Drive to store files, such as your photos, documents, and music.Set up iCloud and iCloud Drive

How much space do I need for a backup?
To see the size of a specific file or folder, click it once and then press Command-I. To see storage information about your Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left of your screen. Choose About This Mac and click the Storage tab. For Time Machine backups, it's good to use a drive that has at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac.
