Sweet Spot: The Best 14- to 15-Inch Laptops Laptops with 14- to 15.6-inch screens are the most popular, because they hit the sweet spot between portability and features that most users find desirable.

AMD and Nvidia are (still) fighting it out for gaming dominance on the desktop, with new products such as the Nvidia RTX Super line and the AMD Radeon RX 5700 series, as well as in laptops. Right now, the landscape can be confusing, but generally the best gaming laptops are running Nvidia's RTX graphics, which first came to desktop PCs in late 2018, and to laptops in January 2019.

Editor's Note: A variety of Apple laptops are currently on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday, including the 2018 MacBook Air for $1,069 ($130 off), and the MacBook Pro 13-inch with Touch Bar for. [Updated] Best Black Friday 2018 deals on Apple MacBook laptops, Mac desktops. They are few and far between, but sales on Apple's computers do happen. Given that Apple’s MacBook rivals — the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro — were both recently refreshed this year, there aren’t as many deals on the 12-inch Mac laptop this year. For this roundup, we've taken all the laptops with discrete graphics hardware we've tested over the past year and a half and ranked them based on 3D performance. Below are those with top performance from that group, and you can also scroll through the full list of game benchmark results here.

If you're building a desktop gaming rig, start with our guide to desktop graphics, but if you're in the market for a gaming laptop, these are the very best ones we've tested. All of these gaming laptops, from just under $1,000 to $5,000 or more, can easily support high-end virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and many new designs fit top-tier graphics hardware into wafer-thin laptop bodies.

When reviewing a gaming laptop or desktop, we run preset performance tests using several games, including Far Cry 5, Metro: Exodus and others, along with standard benchmarks like 3DMark, which is designed to test a computer's 3D graphic rendering capabilities.

For this list, we're ranking the best gaming laptops in descending order of 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra scores, but the real-world game scores (presented as the number of frames of animation per second the laptop can render) match very closely. Note that these scores are specifically for the exact configurations of each laptop we tested, and almost all can be configured with a wide range of options.

At the very top are two high-end gaming laptops that use desktop-class processors and full-power Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics: the Alienware Area-51m and the Origin PC Eon-17X. Those are both at the top end of the price scale, but gaming laptops at more reasonable prices, including systems from Asus, Dell, Origin PC, Lenovo, HP, MSI and Razer, among others, are all represented.

New and notable for this summer update of the best gaming laptops are the latest model of the Razer Blade 15 Advanced, equipped with a stunning OLED screen that's good for creative work; HP's novel dual-screen Omen X 2S; and the budget-friendly but powerful Lenovo Legion Y545.

The exact scores and graphics hardware specs for all tested gaming laptops are located here.

On top of the satisfying visual refresh rate of Alienware's highest-end laptop, the Area-51m offers an impressive 17.3-inch display, an excellent keyboard, and plenty of processing overhead from PC gaming CPUs and the latest RTX GPUs. Plus, a modular processor and GPU design lets you get inside the case and replace both the processor and graphics card for terrific gaming performance.

Sarah Tew/CNET

Like the Alienware Area-51m, the Origin PC Eon-17X features the desktop-class Intel Core i9-9900K processor and the new Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card. This combination made these our two top-performing laptops so far from all of 2018-2019.

The Acer Predator Triton 900's rotating display is a great idea that's also well executed. The keyboard incorporates mechanical switches that feel very good, and its performance is fast -- though as a laptop, the keyboard and short battery life may be a drawback for some.

Sarah Tew/CNET

The 2018 version of this laptop, with a desktop CPU and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card, was right behind the updated version. It's pricey and has a modest battery life, but it delivers top-notch performance.

This updated Asus ROG Zephyrus combines both a slim, professional-looking design with the expanded power of Nvidia's new RTX graphics card for an excellent gaming experience, though at the cost of battery life.

Specs and performance are closely related, so depending on your needs, keep a close eye on the processor, the graphics card, the available memory options, and the display resolution. • Affordable price
  • Excellent performance
  • Plenty of connectivity options
  • Upgradeable components

Key Specs

• Eighth-generation Intel Core i5 CPU (quad-core)
• NVIDIA GeForce MX150 graphics
• 8 GB of RAM (upgradeable to 16 GB)
• 15.6-inch IPS display with 1,920 by 1,080 pixels
• 256 GB of SSD storage
• Built-in DVD burner
• Two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, one USB-C 3.1 port
• SD card slot
• Up to 15 hours of battery life

The Acer Aspire E15 Windows 10 laptop offers great value, top-notch performance and battery life, and excellent hardware for its sub-$600 price tag. With Intel's latest quad-core processor, a NVIDIA graphics card, and a speedy solid-state drive on board, the notebook can keep pace with much pricier offerings. Unlike most of them, the Aspire E15 also gives you the option to upgrade some of its key components.

The notebook is far from perfect though. In order to make the Aspire E15 attractively priced, Acer has settled for an all-plastic body with decidedly boring design. To sum things up, you'll be paying for internal components, not looks and craftsmanship. A touch-screen panel would have been welcome, too — though at this price point, it's not exactly mandatory.

CNET and PCMag testers liked the great specs and performance the Aspire E15 offers for its price tag, though CNET did note that the notebook is a tad too heavy for frequent use on the go.

If you're looking for an even more affordable option, consider this Acer Aspire E15 configuration instead. It has a less powerful processor, less RAM, and a slower, conventional hard drive for less than $350.

Thanks to Intel's latest generation processors and gaming-grade graphics cards, the notebook is so powerful, it'll completely change your performance expectations about 2-in-1 laptops going forward.

With a GeForce GTX 1050 graphics chip on board, the 13.5-inch model is no slouch either.

The Acer Predator Helios 300 laptop delivers an excellent gaming experience (including virtual reality) and upgradeable hardware at an attractive price point. The notebook is also well-built and full of handy wired connectivity options.

We like that the notebook has a display with high refresh rate. A pleasant surprise in a sub-$1,000 gaming rig, the feature results in smoother gameplay, worthy of a higher price tag. The device's metal chassis is also a decidedly upmarket feature for this price point.

We wish that the display bezels were a bit more reasonably sized. But, to be fair, they're no different than those of most other gaming laptops in this price category.

The Retina display of the new MacBook Air is excellent and a massive upgrade over the screen of the previous generation. The built-in stereo speakers of the notebook complement the display perfectly — they sound amazing for a device this lightweight and thin.

Powered by a dual-core Intel processor, the latest MacBook Air delivers excellent performance for its ultra elegant form factor. During our in-depth review, we found the notebook to be a perfect option for all, but the most demanding Mac users will be better off spending more on a MacBook Pro with a quad-core processor.

The ASUS Chromebook C223 is an affordable alternative to the pricier C434 we already mentioned, (this option will cost you just a tad above $200).
